A Good Weekend

Well, Friday Harris and I left Brownsville and drove to Memphis to pick up our daddy! Matt arrived at the airport around 7pm. We couldn't wait to see him so met up in baggage claim. Harris was itching to get out of the stroller when he spotted him. It was really sweet! Matt requested Swanky's for dinner so had us some tacos then in for the night.

We stayed at Matt's dad's over the weekend to spend some time with them. Matt was requiring lots of rest on Saturday from all the traveling. I helped host a baby shower for a dear friend. Harris had fun in the backyard with Gramps & Memaw. He can say "bushes" now...maybe because he continues to have a thing for throwing balls in the bushes! Crazy kid!

Sunday was a super lazy day other than taking Harris to the park. We stayed long enough to acquire some heat exhaustion and then it was nap time for everybody! We transferred to Queenie's house Sunday evening. She is having herself a little vacation at the beach so we have the house to ourselves for a few days. Look out!!:) Just kidding Queenie!

Today wasn't very eventful. Matt and I have been suffering from a terrible cold since last week and think Harris is next. I loaded up on a few meds for him today and prepared! Best part of the day...Harris said "love you" back after Matt said it to him. Unforgettable moment!!! Love him to pieces!!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

I have been slacking this week with the blog! We have tried to stay busy in hopes that Friday will get here sooner. Matt is to arrive in Memphis tomorrow evening. Yay!

Harris and I went to Queenie's on Monday to spend some time with her and friends. Queenie taught Harris how to say "apple". He had fun playing in her backyard as always! Throwing balls in the shrubs and kiddy pool, playing in the sprinkler, and chillin' under the covered patio. Harris and I had a date with my friend Melissa and her almost three year old Charlotte. Harris didn't seem to mind the pink and had a blast in their generous playroom. Of course he couldn't resist wearing a hat he found in the midst of all the toys. We also had some swim time with Kelley and her crew. Harris loved watching Nora & Xander go under water...thought it was so cool! He also started saying Xander's name...comes out "ander". Fun times!!

On Tuesday evening we traveled back to Brownsville to stay with my parents. We have taken it easy last couple of days. I had lunch with Mary Margaret yesterday and we met her and the boys at the pool for an evening swim. Harris is doing so much better with keeping his mouth closed in the water. He still has absolutely NO fear around water. Making this mama a nervous wreck!!

We are picking up our man tomorrow evening and can't wait! Praying he has a safe and smooth trip.

Father's Day

We so wish we could spend this day with Matt!  Happy Father's Day to a wonderful husband and father!  We love you daddy!

Harris and I went to church with Papa and GiGi this morning.  We took some photos, ate lunch, and Harris had a very long nap this afternoon.  Guess he was still pooped from partying last night.  Scott, Brandy, Anna, and Mia came over for dinner.  The cousins played in the backyard and rode the jeep.  That was it for today.

Happy Father's Day!

Busy Saturday

We Skyped with Matt this morning. Says he is going a little stir crazy this weekend. Ready to get back to work and then start his travels back to the US on Thursday. We can't wait till Friday!

Well, I don't think that I stopped today.  I dropped Harris off with MeMaw this morning so I could visit with Carmen and a college friend.  Had a great time catching up!!  Then I attended a cousin's wedding this afternoon and visited with family.  Picked Harris up and headed to the third event of the day...my brother's house to celebrate his passing of the CPA.  It was a great party catered by Swanky's, had all kinds of adult beverages which I couldn't participate in, Brandy made oreo balls (oh so good!!), live music, and a bouncy house for the kids which Harris took full advantage of.  If any kid made their money's worth from the bouncy house, it was Harris!!  Dad and I may have lifted Harris up to the slide inside that bouncy one hundred times...no lie!  I just knew my arms would be sore today.  Anyway, he was delerious by 8:30 at which we said our goodbyes and turned in for the night.

Fun Fiday

We didn't get to speak with Matt today:( He was asked to have dinner with the mill manager tonight. Maybe he fed him some good food! Good news is we have one week left and Matt will be home!

Harris and I went to the park this morning. Thank goodness for a shady play area because it was hot today! The ducks weren't out for some reason which is a bummer! Harris is usually so fascinated by them and says "duck" over and over! We got some energy out then but most was spent this afternoon at the pool. Carmen had invited us to swim with Connor and Grayson. We had some great fun and excitement too! Harris decided to wait and poop AFTER getting in the pool. Not cool! I knew I was in trouble when I saw him making the face. Queenie and I both called it...we knew it was coming. Carmen helped me shower him down in the locker room.  Poor baby was without swimming trunks the rest of the afternoon and just a swimmy diaper on. Ha! I guess we weren't the only ones though because just as we came back from cleaning up we spotted a kid who decided to drop his suit and take a leak on the concrete right next to the kiddy pool! Oh my! Thank goodness Harris isn't old enough to take notes! Queenie taught Harris how to say "mommy where are you? Daddy where are you?" And right before bed Harris wanted to lounge on the sofa opposite end of Queenie. He mimicked her by placing his hands behind his head. So funny! Good Friday!

Oh and I received a picture text from April today. She and her family are keeping our dog while we are in Finland. It appears that she is getting along with their dog. Said they were sleeping next to each other before she tried to take the picture. We miss our sweet Little Bit!!

Play Date

This morning Harris and I met Molly, Hayes, and Tricia at the park for some play time. We haven't seen Harris' friend Hayes in months so it was fun to get them together and see how much they've grown. Hayes is just one month older than Harris. They loved going down the tunnel slide and watching each other come down. We bribed them with a snack to sit next to each other long enough to take a quick photo. (Thanks Tricia for the pics!). It was fun catching up with the girls too!! After soaking a few rays and playing hard we went to Chik f lay for lunch. Hayes could see the play area from our table and kept saying "tunnel!" So cute!! We were so impressed with his vocabulary!! Harris ate most of his lunch along with all of Hayes' yogurt bites I think. And that was after drinking the rest of Molly's water and grabbing Hayes' sippy cup and drinking from it. Yes I do feed my child and yes he did have a cup of his own!! We played in the play area for a while and then off for naps. Good times!!

I spoke with Matt! Said he had been to St. Petersburg today which involved another requirement in order to receive his work permit. He reported a scary car ride experience with a lunatic driver! So glad he is safe and back from that day trip! He did say that St. Petersburg was like New York on steroids and couldn't wait to visit again...by train! He still sounds really good and I'm so proud of him!

Tonight Queenie grilled hamburgers for us and Nana (Matt's grandmother). We watched Harris throw golf balls in the shrubs and say "hot" to the fire on the grill. He was also pointing to our wine glasses and saying "mama's juice" or "nana's juice!" He is learning early!:)

A Zoo Day

Harris and I woke up early this morning to pack up and head to Memphis. We are staying with Queenie (Matt's mom) for the next few days. My cousin Amanda is off for the summer and I had asked her and Reagan (2yo) to meet us at the zoo this morning. Harris and Reagan were so cute together! Lots of ooh's, whoa's, and squeals. Harris told all the animals good bye as we left them. They fed the giraffes, we're treated to dippin dots, rode the carousel, and saw the new dinosaur exhibit. There's not a lot that Harris is fearful of but he became pretty upset with the dinosaurs! After all, it was the end of our zoo tour and nap time anyway. We visited with Queenie this afternoon and played in the backyard. Went to Gramps and MeMaw's (matt's dad and stepmom) for dinner and visiting tonight. Good day!

Harris' new words blue, grass, glasses. Telling me "sit mommy", "night night mommy" while pointing to floor.

We missed Matt's Skype call today:( Sent an email saying he was traveling to St. Petersburg tomorrow. Praying he has a safe trip! We are so looking forward to his return next Friday!!

Harris' new ride

This morning we Skyped with Matt again.  He was able to get his phone set to English and I now have a number...a very long one.  He said he met our American neighbor that lives below us this morning and he was so nice to show him more of Imatra.  He found an indoor pool and tennis courts!!  Yay, maybe I can work on my game!  Showed him an indoor skating/hockey rink.  Says he is really ready to go back to work and has been stir crazy last few days.  Matt watched Harris play in the background.  He was being silly eating cheerios off the floor...literally!  Just a week and a half left that we will be apart!

Today Harris and I went to vacation Bible school again, went to the park, and rode in his new Jeep.  Papa fixed the seat setting so Harris can touch the pedal.  He LOVES turning the key to listen to the engine start up, adjusting his side mirror, finding a station he wants on the radio, and putting it in gear.  So funny!  He can say "jeep", "'grass", and "i did it".  This afternoon we made daddy something special for Father's Day.  Can't wait for him to see it!!

Matt got a phone today!  He hasn't switched the text over to English so not really useful just yet.  He has today and tomorrow off for a Russian holiday.  He said that he bought some items at the grocery.  Thinks he bought some chicken.  Says he will find out when he cooks it...ha!  He is still learning so many customs!  Apparently plopping your grocery basket up on the checker counter is not one of them.  Said he met a neighbor who was very friendly.  Still miss him!!

Harris and I went to the church this morning for vacation Bible school.  He can't participate just yet but thought it would be fun for him to watch the older kids sing for the closing.  He clapped and danced for about 3 seconds and then just wanted to run.  Papa and Gigi watched Harris tonight so I could have dinner with friends.  Had a yummy salad at Houston's and we had such a fun visit that we closed them down.

It's Sunday and we have the Holder (my Granny Jetton's family) reunion to attend in Germantown, TN.  We get to Skype with Matt this morning!  He sounds really good.  He is catching up on some sleep.  Says he checked out a sports bar where he watched a soccer game.  He is wanting a bike and pricing them out.  Still missing him badly!  Granny rides with us to Memphis.  Harris was really sweet with her in the car leaning his head on hers.  Had some good food at the reunion and talked with a relative that turned 102 yesterday.  Harris played with his cousins Anna and Mia, and his second cousin Reagan.  Harris missed his nap at noon, so it didn't take him long to close those eyes on the ride home.  We played at the church playground and rode on the golf carts at the Country Club this evening.  Good day!

It's Saturday and a beautiful day!  Harris and I went to the pool with GiGi this morning.  Harris has absolutely no fear of the water which is a little scary!  He went back and forth from the kiddy pool to the big pool till he wore himself out.  We missed Matt's email and Skype call while at the pool:(((  We won't get to talk until tomorrow.  Harris stayed with Papa and GiGi while I rode with Mary Margaret and her family to the bottoms.  Chism Lake Ripley, TN that is.  They introduced me to a honky tonk bar/restaurant that is on stilts and has floaters in case of floods.  It was actually a cool spot!  Had some crab legs, steak, and a bucket of beer.

Papa's birthday

I tried to call Matt on Skype but he was afraid other people in the office could hear.  The time difference (8 hours) makes it so hard to talk to my husband!  June 22 can't get here quick enough!  Hope he is doing well and eating good!

Today is Papa's birthday!!  He is doing a "job after retirement" today, so we celebrated when he got home.  We went to the infamous HoHo's chinese dive in Bells, TN.  Mr. Kent still hasn't used some of his fortune to correct his rotten teeth.  And Ms. Orchid still makes the BEST eggrolls on the planet!  We visited Harris' great granny Haynes after dinner.  She was so glad to see him.  Says Harris' looks and especially his personality reminds her of my Uncle Tommy.  Oh boy, if he does take after him, we are in trouble!!

We didn't get to talk with Matt today, but emailed a few times.  He is staying in Svetegorsk tonight for a going away party.  (The guy that was assigned as his boss resigned two weeks ago.)  He said the hotel he was staying at was dreadful!  Said it made the Quality Inn that we stayed at a few weeks ago look like the Ritz Carlton, so I felt really bad for him!!  We are so thankful that we had the option to live in Finland!!

Harris is saying "icy" for popsicle, and "in there" pointing to freezer.  He is getting spoiled with all kinds of treats!  We rode to Millington today with GiGi and met Brandy at the naval base.  Brandy needed to get some goodies for Scott's party next Saturday.  Picked up some PJ's for Harris and a little outfit for our nephew, Halford, who is due to arrive in September.

Missing Daddy

Yay!  We finally Skype with daddy!  Harris and I are so glad to see him and hear his voice!  So Matt has access to our apartment today.  Says it's nice and furnished with the essentials.  Our washer and dryer is in one of the bathrooms...hmm that's different.  We do not have a bathtub.  Not a problem for me or Matt, but might be a challenge to bathe a two year old in the shower.  And for the simple fact that he can't play in the water:(  Oh well, one of the few sacrifices!  Matt also got our lease car today.  Matt says the town is very quaint and thinks I will love it.  There is a playground within walking distance from the apartment.  Woo hoo!  Matt is telling me to get ready!  Says that EVERYTHING is different.  Our Skype connection wasn't very good so didn't talk long.  Harris blew daddy some kisses, waved, and said "bye daddy".  We miss him!!!

Harris is saying 2-3 new words every day now.  This morning we played outside and went to the park.  We found a jeep power wheels at the lock stock and barrell store that is in excellent condition.  Sounds silly but Harris will still be big enough to enjoy it when we come back and the neices can enjoy it this summer.  Went to the pool this afternoon and Harris loved it!  He is doing very well with his puddle jumper floaty.  He's learning to keep his head up and close his mouth.  I hope we can find a pool in Imatra!

The Calls

I will never forget the days of "the calls" of which determined these last two moves for our family.  Not to be all dramatic or anything, but I never thought we would make serious changes in our lives all because of a job!  But hey, you just try and make the best decisions based on what you know at the  present time and what you hope for your future.

I was six months pregnant with our first child and we were comfortably settled in our first home of two years.  Matt had just finished painting the nursery.  Matt was also ready for the next step in his career...new challenges and responsibilities.  He had thrown the idea around of working in a paper mill before just in casual conversation, and we knew that another position for him was brewing, just didn't know what or when.  Well, Matt was hit with two proposals at once.  One was a position just created in Memphis.  The other...paper mill in Valiant, OK.  I remember picking Matt up from work because one of the cars was being worked on.  The first word of the paper mill job was in the car ride home that day.  We didn't really think much about it.  As the week progressed, Matt received a phone call from HR suggesting that he interview for the mill job.  Matt told her he didn't think it was a good time to consider a move being that his wife was six months pregnant and has two jobs herself.  Somehow she convinced him and before I knew it, we were on a plane to Shreveport, LA and driving into Paris, TX for an interview.  I just remember thinking..."I can't believe we are doing this!  Why are we doing this?  We are not moving to Texas!"  We only spent one night so didn't have much time to scope out the town, but there long enough to figure out Paris, TX was far from what we were accustomed to.  This girl grew up in a small town, but it wasn't MY small town if you know what I mean.  Well, next day was interview day.  Matt rode with the HR rep into the mill while I stayed at the hotel.  IP had arranged for a real estate agent to pick me up and to"show some homes."  At this point I'm really thinking "what the heck are we doing?"  After finishing up the morning tour of homes, I was to meet Matt for lunch with the interviewers in Valiant, OK.  Guess you are wondering why we wouldn't be looking at homes there since that's where the job would be.  Well, lets just say it's a mill town...simple as that!  So, on my way to Valiant, I get pulled over in the rental for speeding.  Is this a dream?  Nope!  Cop had no sympathy for this woman with child!  Finally get to the mill, had lunch, met the team, and informally told Matt and I this job would be offered.  I distinctly remember that three hour car ride back to Shreveport.  We discussed every pro and con of taking the mill job.  Matt didn't have much time to make a decision because the other job in Memphis was needing an answer.  Well, somewhere between Valiant and Shreveport we had made a joint decision to go for the mill.  The following day was Friday...formal offer day from mill and giving Memphis job an answer.  I was scheduled to work at the hospital and called in sick.  I wasn't mentally capable of taking care of sick children on a day that Matt would accept a job and determined where we would be living for the next two years.  So, he did.  Got "the call" somewhere mid morning.  Job accepted in April, started in June, closed on a house June 30th (our anniversary), all moved in by mid July, and had our first child, Harris, born on August 18th.

The next two years were hard being away from family and friends, but we made it.  We made some great friends and found our favorite spots for the weekends.  Harris became known as "Harris from Paris" and his daddy even came up with a song.  We had lots of family and friends that traveled to see us which we will be forever grateful for.  The time we spent in Paris wasn't so bad.  Having Harris in our lives was beyond wonderful and it wouldn't have mattered where we landed.

Matt was coming up on his two years at the mill which was a timeline IP had in mind for the position he was in.  There was also a "redesign" taking place within the finance department.  We were starting to wonder...what do you think is the next step? when/what will they propose?  It was the end of February.  We had just spent a long weekend in Memphis for a family reunion.  We were traveling back to Paris on a Sunday, when faced with a bad scare on the interstate that involved a flying ladder and us doing three spins and landing in the median.  Needless to say, we had a few nerves shot for the remaining drive and a sleepless night.  The next day Harris and I were doing our morning stroll in the neighborhood and then walking up to every house that owned a basketball goal (he had just taken on an obsession for basketball).  I received "the call" from Matt saying that he had talked to his boss about a new position.  He asked me..."Are you ready?  You are going to freak out!"  Me..."What? Tell!"  Matt...RUSSIA!  Umm...ok this is nuts!  We were near being in a fatal car accident yesterday and today we are hit with a job opportunity in Russia?  This is too much!  Shocked?...yes.  Opposed?...not really.  I just remember telling Matt..."We have to."  Of course I'm thinking about what this could mean for his career.  But I'm also thinking...anything to get us out of Paris and back to Memphis!  So here we are.  Our next abode will be a three bedroom apartment in Imatra, Finland.

Harris and I are staying with Papa and Gigi (my parents) this week in Brownsville, TN.  We played outside this morning and went to the baseball field to watch Mary Margaret's boys play this evening.  Harris would occasionally go up to the fence and say "ball" or "whoa" when the batter hit the ball.  He had the most fun with throwing rocks in the garbage can.  Can we say "all boy!"

Update on Matt's travel:
Matt made it to Manchester and is now in Imatra.  Said he is exhausted as we can all imagine.  Thank goodness for Skype!  Maybe Harris and I can see and talk to him tomorrow.

Big Moves

Well, today marks the beginning of a big step for the High family.  I dropped Matt off this morning at the Memphis airport to become oriented with international travel.  Destination...Finland/Russia.  After three long weeks of being away from me and Harris, he will return to the US only to move us all to Imatra, Finland for approximately one year.  Matt was given a rare and amazing opportunity to work in Svetegorsk, Russia at an (International Paper) paper mill.  He will be a "Project Manager" specific to finance.  I am so excited for him and proud of all of his accomplishments since being hired by IP in 2005.  Matt, you are going to do a great job and will make such a great impression during this assignment!

Shutting down for tonight.  More details to come of how all of the above evolved.

Good night,
Stacy
